Client Rights

Respect and Safety

Clients have the right to:

  • Be treated with dignity and respect and to be protected from embarrassment or invasion of privacy.
  • Information regarding the scope and availability of services. This includes information on services, hours of access, provisions for after hour resources, and emergency services. 
  • Expect that their personal convictions and cultural beliefs will be honored and taken into consideration as they are seeking/utilizing services. The MSU SAP does not discriminate in regards to race, gender, age, disability, socio-economic class, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, or marital status.
  • Expect that the personal convictions and cultural beliefs of their counselor will not adversely affect the provision of SAP services.
  • Services provided in a clean, safe, affirming environment free from any type of abuse.

High Quality Counseling Services

Clients have the right to:

  • Expect care from properly trained and licensed mental health professionals.
  • Ask questions about their counselor’s qualifications, training, and experience.
  • Participate appropriately in decisions regarding counseling and to receive counseling services that are suited to their specific presenting problems.
  • Ask questions and refuse any specific treatment methods.
  • Request a transfer from one counselor to another counselor within the program.
  • Discontinue services at any time, for any reason, with no consequences in regards to their future use of MSU SAP services.

Confidentiality and Privacy

Clients have the right to:

  • Information pertaining to a client will be held in strict confidence.  No identifying information will be shared without the client’s informed consent.    
  • Refuse or prevent any third party disclosure of verbal or written information related to their case, except when disclosure by a counselor is required by law or when life is in danger.

Quality Assurance

Clients are encouraged to express their compliments or make a complaint about the MSU Sexual Assault Program in one or more of the following ways:

  2. Complete a quarterly feedback survey.
